How to Stop Feeling Bad About Setbacks

Setbacks are a normal part of every writers’s life and career. Unfortunately knowing this doesn’t make them easier to accept.

Hitting a setback sucks! Especially when it’s through no fault of your own. And who would know better than me?

I have spent this last week in a flu-ey stupor as I have sneezed, coughed, wiped, and cried my way towards the weekend, knowing my fiction word count would stand still until my body found the strength to banish the infection for good.

And here I am on Sunday, still sniffling into my Kleenex and shuffling around the house in my PJs, facing a busy work week at my day job and stressing over all of the words I haven’t written.

And just when I thought nothing could pull me out of my self-depreciating headspace, I found a quote that disrupted the vicious cycle of negative self-talk and doubt:

I am the underdog, and I want to prove that one can follow one's dreams despite all the flaws and setbacks.

I must admit that I have no idea who Winnie Harlow is but today she saved me a huge amount of pain by offering me an alternative perspective on my miserable situation.

This quote gave me some self-belief and a role that I prefer over the victim role I am usually so quick to jump into. Today I am the underdog – out to prove a point just like Winnie Harlow. And it feels damn fine.

Also, I have written this blog post, which is all I have written this week. Meaning that I have written something and that’s better than nothing in my books.

  1. I needed to read this blog today. After a writing setback last week when a paid editor’s feedback made me question everything and then a cough and sore throat turned into a fever by Sunday, I feels weeks behind on all my previous goals. Flaws–check. Setback–check. Underdog . . . I like the sound of that.
